Staff of Life Grocery Store
Full Service design build renovation, converting a 16,000 Square foot car dealership into a 24,000 Square foot grocery store. The project maintained a rigorous 8 month building schedule and won a City of Santa Cruz Green Building Award.
Started in 1969 by Richard Josephson and Gary Bascou, Staff moved to its present location in 1971. After an expansion in 1981, and numerous remodelings and renovations, Staff today is a superstore complete with a sushi bar, natural foods deli, natural meat & fish department, organic produce department, a huge bulk foods department, and a separate building for our supplement and health & beauty departments.

GREEN FEATURES:
Light Harvesting – dims the lights based on how much sunlight is coming in through the many sky lights installed throughout the building.
Variable Speed Compressors: all of the coolers and freezers will be sharing 6 variable speed compressor system. This means they conserve energy and save on their PG&E bill, which allows them to keep prices low. And the system utilizes Heat Reclamation from the condensers to preheat the hot water for the building!
Clean Air Regeneration: There are over 25 destrafication fans throughout the building as part of an air purification system. These will regenerate the air in the store, and circulate warm air from above with cool air from below, multiple times an hour. That means there will always be fresh, clean air, free from odors, germs, dust, or just plain old staleness.
Clean Water In and Out: Located at the edges of the parking lot, the Bio Swales filter almost all of the run off water from the site through a series of plants and soil that will purify it before going back to the ground and eventually the bay.
